What tastes good without sugar or with less sugar?

Water, sparkling water and unsweetened infusions: ideas to vary your drinks and what to check on labels when choosing less sugar.

Start with what you like about the drink

To find an alternative to a sweet drink, identify what attracts you: the bubbles, tartness, coldness or sweetness. Someone who likes fizzy drinks may enjoy plain sparkling water, while someone seeking aroma and flavour could try an unsweetened infusion. There is no need to buy a case of an unfamiliar drink; start with a small quantity and see whether you actually enjoy it.

Water and sparkling water with a little added flavour

Plain or sparkling water without sweetening are simple sugar-free options. The CDC suggests adding berries or slices of lemon, lime or cucumber to vary the flavour. Try different temperatures too: a very cold glass does not feel the same as room-temperature water. The aim is to find something pleasant to drink without turning every glass into a project.

Tea and infusions without sweetening

Unsweetened teas and infusions can add variety. Preparing them at home lets you control what goes in the cup and serve them hot or chilled. Watch for ready-made drinks sold as iced tea: the name alone does not mean they contain no sugar. Honey and syrup added at home also count when trying to reduce sweetness and sugar.

Look beyond the front of the bottle

No added sugar does not necessarily mean sugar-free. Check the nutrition table, ingredient list and serving volume you actually drink. Compare products using the same volume. A drink with less sugar than another can still contain sugar; marketing language does not replace the figures on the packaging.

What about juice and smoothies?

Fruit juice is not the same as water, even without added sugar. The World Health Organization notes that most fruit juices, including those without added sugar, contain significant amounts of free sugars that should be limited. A homemade smoothie does not become sugar-free because it is homemade either. You can enjoy different drinks while understanding their contents, rather than treating them as identical alternatives.

Buy a machine only if it fits the habit

A sparkling water maker may be convenient if you already like sparkling water, but is not necessary to start changing your drinks. Before buying, check the cost of the machine and consumables, available space and ease of use. Start by choosing a drink you enjoy; only then decide whether additional equipment will actually help you maintain the habit.
