Home styling: start with what you already have
Layout, lighting, textiles and colour: a practical way to refresh your home with clear priorities.

First understand what is not working
Choose one room and write down what does not work in daily life. Perhaps the route to the balcony is cramped, there is nowhere to put a bag or the light beside the sofa is poor for reading. Describing the problem leads towards a better solution than a general shopping list. Photograph the room in daylight and measure the main furniture, openings and walkways before moving things or ordering.
Try a new arrangement before buying
Check whether existing furniture can improve the room. Moving an armchair or removing a side table can clear a passage. Do not settle for an attractive picture: walk through with a laundry basket, open doors and drawers and sit where you actually spend time. Mark the footprint of new furniture on the floor before ordering, to get a feel for the space it takes up.
Choose a limited colour palette
Start with an item that will stay in the room, such as a sofa or rug, and choose a small number of colours to accompany it. Test a paint sample at home at different times; a photograph in a shop or on a screen does not show exactly how your wall will look. You do not need to paint every surface to make a change. Sometimes a curtain, cushion cover or wooden item brings together what is already in the room.
Lighting and textiles support the way you use the room
Think separately about general lighting, task lighting and pleasant evening light. A lamp's position needs to suit the socket and the way people move through the room. Changes to electrical installations require an appropriate professional. When choosing a rug or curtain, check dimensions and care requirements as well as colour. In a busy home, something easy to clean and arrange may work better than an item requiring care you do not want to undertake.
Buy in order of priority
Divide the list into what the room needs to function and what adds atmosphere. Start with an item that solves a clear problem and live with the change before buying the next. Keep dimensions, colour samples and photographs on your phone for comparison in the shop. A successful room is pleasant to use after the cushions have moved, not just at the moment it is photographed.
