Laptop care: small habits that keep things in order
Carrying, cleaning and backups: how to make simple maintenance part of your computer routine.

Give the computer a stable place
Start with an organised workspace: a stable surface, room for the cable and distance from drinks. Check where your model's vents are and avoid covering them. Prolonged use on a blanket or cushion can block them. If the laptop becomes unusually hot or shuts down, do not simply keep moving it; check the manufacturer's instructions and contact support as needed.
Carry it without pressure on the screen
Before putting it in a bag, disconnect accessories that could put pressure on ports and check that nothing remains on the keyboard. Use a compartment or sleeve that fits the laptop, and keep drink bottles separate. Do not load heavy objects onto the lid. Lift the computer by its base rather than its screen, and arrange the cable so opening the bag does not pull it taut.
Clean according to the model's instructions
Turn off the computer and unplug it before cleaning, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for the screen and casing. Apple's guidance stresses not spraying liquid directly onto the computer and avoiding moisture in openings. Do not assume a product permitted on one device suits every screen or coating. A soft, clean cloth is a starting point, but how it is dampened must also follow the specific instructions.
Files need their own maintenance
Choose a regular backup method for important files and occasionally try restoring a sample file. Another folder on the same drive does not protect against failure of the drive itself. Before a major update or sending the laptop for repair, confirm the backup is complete and you know how to access it. Keep necessary access and recovery details separately, without leaving passwords on a note in the bag.
Signs you should not put off checking
A broken connection, unusual smell, swelling casing or recurring fault needs appropriate investigation. Do not try opening a battery or keep using a computer that appears damaged just to finish one more task. Record the model and problem and contact service support. Good maintenance is not a collection of tricks; it is sensible use, an accessible backup and addressing a problem before it disrupts all your work.
