Cancel-for-any-reason flight insurance: what to check

Who initiated the cancellation, when cover was purchased and how much can be recovered: key questions before adding insurance to a trip booking.

Any reason does not mean any conditions

Cancel-for-any-reason flight insurance may allow a passenger to cancel without a medical reason or another specified event. But the phrase does not remove the policy's conditions: purchase and cancellation deadlines, covered expenses, limits and exclusions still determine cover. Do not assume you will recover the full trip price. Before buying, request the complete document and your individual coverage details, rather than just a brief description on the payment page.

Who cancelled the flight?

Your decision not to go on holiday differs from an airline's cancellation. With a product designed for cancellation by the insured person, cancellation by the supplier may not be the relevant insured event. When the airline cancels, also check your rights with the airline or agent under the circumstances and applicable law. Do not cancel a booking yourself after it has already changed without understanding how that action will affect refund options.

Timing is part of the product

Ask how long after booking the trip you can buy cover and how late you can notify a cancellation. These are separate questions, and answers may vary between products. Also check what happens if you add a hotel or another service after buying insurance. Keep the dates of booking, payment and joining the cover so you do not have to reconstruct them when submitting a request.

Which amount is the refund based on?

List the trip components: flights, accommodation, car hire and additional services. Beside each, note whether it can be cancelled, how much the supplier refunds and what remains non-refundable. Ask which components are insured and how reimbursement is calculated. The total booking price is not necessarily the amount to which the refund percentage applies. Request an example using figures from your booking, including limits and any excess.

Insurance and cancellation services are not necessarily the same

Booking websites may also offer flexible options or commercial cancellation services. Check who undertakes to provide the refund, whether it is cash or credit, its validity period and any usage conditions. A similar name does not guarantee an identical agreement. Compare the extra cost with a flexible ticket or a booking with different cancellation terms, without assuming one option is always better value.

What to keep and how to make a request

Keep the policy wording, booking confirmation, receipts, cancellation confirmations and the supplier's refund or cancellation fee breakdown. Check in advance whom you must notify, how and by when. Request written acknowledgement of your request, but remember that receipt is not approval for payment. If the answer is unclear, ask which clause applies to your case and what is missing to complete the review.

Start with your actual financial exposure

Suitable cover should be assessed against what you could lose and the flexibility already built into your bookings. If the hotel's cancellation terms are generous, for example, understand what additional protection you are actually buying for it. Do not infer what an Israeli product covers from the terms of a product abroad. The specific agreement is the basis for your decision, and if in doubt, obtain a written answer from the insurer or professional adviser before paying.
